Rt. Rev. PD Dr. Joseph Mar Ivanios Episcopa is a distinguished Church historian, theologian, and spiritual leader of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. Born on 19th August 1970 as the son of Karamvelimannil Sri. Thomas Daniel and Smt. Saramma Thomas of Kochukoickal Trinity Mar Thoma Parish, he has dedicated his life to theological scholarship, ecumenical dialogue, and the mission of the Church across India and around the world. He was consecrated as Episcopa on 2nd December 2023 at the Holy Madbaha prepared at the Thiruvalla SCS ground.

Journey of Faith & Scholarship

His Eminence completed his B.A. in History from St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry, and M.A. in History from Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta — securing First Rank and the University Gold Medal. His theological formation began at the Mar Thoma Theological Seminary, Kottayam, where he obtained his B.D. in 1998, followed by ordination as Semmash on 19 June 1998 by Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa, and as Kassessa on 16 July 1998 by Rt. Rev. Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa. He earned his M.Th. in History of Christianity at FFRRC, Kottayam in 2006, his D.Th. from the University of Bern, Switzerland in 2014, and completed his postdoctoral Habilitation from the University of Bern in 2024 — one of the highest academic qualifications in the European university system.

He is the author of several significant scholarly works, including One Family Under Heaven (ISPC, 2008), Ecumenism in Praxis: A Historical Critique of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church (Peter Lang, 2014, 328 pages), and The Mar Thoma Ecclesiology: Roots, Reforms and Reach (214 pages). He currently serves as Privatdozent at the Christkatholisches Institute, University of Bern, and as Professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, with guest lectureships at universities across Europe. He has represented the Mar Thoma Church at the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), serving on the Policy Reference Committee of the WCC Karlsruhe Assembly in 2022. His institutional memberships include the European Society for Ecumenical Research, United Theological College Bangalore, Mar Thoma Theological Seminary, Serampore University, and the Fellowship of Indian Denominational Churches in Malaysia and Singapore.

Before his consecration, he served as Vicar in parishes at Mylom, K.R. Puram, and Marathhalli in Bangalore, as well as in Singapore, Switzerland, Germany, and Kumbanad, and as Chaplain to Metropolitan Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma. He also taught Church History at the E.J. Institute, Kompady, and the Mar Thoma Theological Seminary. He was installed as Ramban on 2nd October 2023 at Pazhavangadikkara Immanuel Mar Thoma Church, Ranni. His ministry is consistently marked by intellectual rigor, ecumenical openness, and faithful pastoral care.

Life Milestones

Born on 19th August 1970 to Karamvelimannil Sri. Thomas Daniel and Smt. Saramma Thomas of Kochukoickal Trinity Mar Thoma Parish, he was ordained as Deacon (Semmash) on 19th June 1998 and as Kassissa on 16th July 1998. He was installed as Ramban on 2nd October 2023 at Pazhavangadikkara Immanuel Mar Thoma Church, Ranni, and consecrated as Episcopa on 2nd December 2023 at the Thiruvalla SCS ground. He completed his Habilitation (post-doctoral) from the University of Bern, Switzerland in 2024.
